Lots of big grins these days. Sometimes the writing life hugs you back!

At last week's Book Expo America, Six Kinds of Sky was named the editor's choice as best book of fiction for 2002 by Foreward Magazine. It bested several dozen finalists for the honor, designed for books presented by independent publishers. We haven't seen the sculpture trophy, but are eager to get our hands on it and we'll definitely share a peek! Kudos also, of course, to the publishers at Cinco Puntos Press. This was a book promised to Bobby Byrd several years ago and he had the patience to wait. Guess it paid off all the way around! Almost as big is the sense of excitement and relief after Luis finished the manuscript for The Devil's Highway, due out from Little, Brown in Feb. 2004.

Book club members have been some of my most enthusiastic and careful readers. I’m thrilled to share my work with you, answer your questions and tell you some of the stories behind the stories. This is our spot, just for us. Here, we can chat:  If I’m nearby, I’ll come and visit your club. Otherwise, we can Skype, talk over the phone or email. Sometimes, I’ll send surprises or hold contests.
